Mike Brey, Blue Hens basketball coach, was named America East Coach of the Year-sharing the honor with University of Vermont coach Tom Brennan-and his team is one step away from the America East Championship.
This is the first time in conference history two coaches have been selected for the honor, with each receiving identical votes in the polling.
The announcement of Brey's honor was made Feb. 26 at the America East Tournament banquet at Clayton Hall.
Brey came to UD from Duke University in 1995, and this season the Blue Hens tied Boston University for the America East regular-season championship.
Mike Pegues, UD sophomore forward, was named to the America East all-conference men's basketball first team, and senior guard Keith Davis was named to the third team.
After two victories in the opening rounds of the America East championship tournament last weekend- including a 60-51 victory over Hofstra University in the semifinals last weekend-the Blue Hens (19-9) advanced to this weekend's final conference tournament game.
A crowd of more than 4,000 witnessed the victory in the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware-the tournament's No. 1 seed-is going up against the Boston University Terriers (19-10) for the America East basketball championship at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 7, at the Bob Carpenter Center, with the winner advancing to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.
The game is sold out, but will be televised live on ESPN and broadcast on WDEL radio.
