For items the library does not own

University faculty, students and staff may request that books be borrowed or that photocopies be obtained of materials not owned by the University of Delaware Library. The Library funds this interlibrary loan service and users are not charged.

The UD Library has established several reciprocal interlibrary loan agreements with major research libraries and uses commercial document suppliers to provide high quality copies within a few days in many cases.

Online requests

Use the Library electronic interlibrary loan request form on the World Wide Web for fast, efficient communication. The electronic interlibrary loan form is available under "ILL and Document Delivery" and also under "Online Forms" on the Library web page. Printed forms are also available from the Library interlibrary loan office.

Another convenient method for requesting interlibrary loan is to use OCLC FirstSearch, listed under "Library Networked Databases" on the Library web page. Select "interlibrary loan" as the order option. Articles from journals for which subscriptions have been cancelled from Jan. 1, 1997, on may also be available via Current Contents/TOC document ordering service.

Fast delivery

The Library can obtain photocopies of materials within a matter of a few days in many cases. Obtaining books is dependent of the book's availability at another library and may take somewhat longer. Interlibrary loan is dependent on other libraries and vendors, so response time can vary, but every attempt is made to obtain materials as quickly as possible.
