Awards to recognize women

The Office of Women's Affairs is seeking nominations by March 16 for the Bessie B. Collins Award and the Mae Carter Award, both recognizing the achievements of returning adult women students.

To qualify for the Bessie B. Collins award of $200, a nominee must be a woman more than 25 years old, a matriculated junior, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, demonstrate future promise, have overcome special difficulties and have made contributions to the University and greater community.

The award honors the former dean of women, Bessie B. Collins, who was an early advocate and supporter of continuing education for women. It is meant to continue that support and to recognize the variety of perspectives, diversity and richness adult students bring to the University community.

To qualify for the Mae Carter Award of $250, a nominee must be an undergraduate or graduate returning adult woman student with a minimum grade point average of 3.0, who has demonstrated service to women on the campus and a commitment to scholarship.

The award honors Mae Carter, former assistant provost for women's affairs and executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women.

The award recognizes a woman student, who through service to women on campus and commitment to scholarship, exemplifies the values Mae Carter has represented to UD women.

Nomination forms and further information are available at the Office of Women's Affairs in Room 305 Hullihen Hall, by calling 831-8063 or by e-mail to Nancy.Soccorso@mvs.udel.edu

Nominations must be accompanied by an autobiographical letter from the nominee describing her background, career plans and how she exemplifies the criteria for the award. A self-nomination is acceptable, but a supporting letter is necessary.
