Two workshops on active learning in large classes are being held by the Center for Teaching Effectiveness (CTE).
The first, "Nuts and Bolts: How Do I Get Started?", facilitated by Maryellen Weimer, a faculty member in speech communication at Berks Lehigh Valley College of Pennsylvania State University, and Gabriele Bauer, CTE, will be held from 1-3 p.m., Friday, March 6, in Room 208, Gore Hall.
The session is designed for faculty with little or no experience as instructors of large classes. It will demonstrate a variety of methods that can be incorporated into teaching large classes. Using videotaped examples, participants will develop ideas about what to use in their own classes.
"Beyond the Nuts and Bolts," also facilitated by Weimer, is for faculty and teaching assistants who have some experience in teaching large classes and will be held from 1-3 p.m., Friday, March 27, in Room 103, Gore Hall.
Participants' prior experiences (What worked? What didn't work and why?) will serve as the basis for the workshop, which will look at innovative and effective ways to enhance student learning in a large class setting.
A college teacher for more than 25 years, Weimer directed the Instructional Development Program at Penn State for 10 years and served as associate director of the National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning and Assessment. She has written books on improving college teaching and large class instruction and has been a presenter at faculty development programs throughout the United States and Canada.
