UD ice hockey team heads to national tournament in March

The University of Delaware's ice hockey team has earned a spot in the American Collegiate Hockey Association's National Championship Tournament to be held March 4-7 in Ames, Iowa.

Teams are invited based on their ranking at the end of January. Going into the month, the UD team was ranked ninth. After its 7-1 winning record during the month, it moved into seventh place.

This will be UD's third consecutive trip to the national tournament, which this year is hosted by Iowa State University. Last season, the Blue Hens posted a 2-2-0 record at the nationals to finish sixth in the country.

After graduating nine seniors from the 1996-97 team, the young Blue Hens have matured quickly, posting a current record of 17-6-2. They currently stand in first place in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association's (ECHA) Northern Division.

Prior to traveling to the nationals, Delaware will try to defend its ECHA position in the Playoff Championship to be held on Feb. 20-22 at the UD Fred Rust Ice Arena, South College Avenue, Newark.
