Police program earns award

The UD's Community Policing Certificate program will receive the Association for Continuing Higher Education's national award for noncredit programming at the ACHE national conference, to be held Oct. 28, in State College, Pa.

The UD program was acknowledged for its innovative program design and creative approach to interorganizational partnerships.

Tish Szymurski, the manager of the program and the director for criminal justice programs, will accept for the University.

The UD program was developed by a national team including Szymurski; Steve Bunting, UD Public Safety, Lewes; Capt. Roy Kindrick, director of the Western Regional Community Policing Center, Portland, Ore.; Commander Michael Nila, Aurora Police Department, Aurora, Ill.; and Matthew Shipp, UD continuing education.

The next set of sessions offered in the certificate program, believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, will be hosted this fall by the Delaware River and Bay Authority. Classes will be held at the DRBA administration building, at I-295 and New Castle Ave., New Castle, Del.

To receive the certificate, participants must complete four two-day seminars and two one-day seminars.

Faculty in the program are well-known experts in law enforcement who bring a national perspective to this innovative program. They include Ondra Berry, deputy chief, community affairs, Reno, Nev.; Andrew Mills, sergeant, San Diego, Calif., Police Department; Michael Nila, Aurora University Police Department; John Perkins, lieutenant, Aurora, Ill., Police Department; and William Smith, lieutenant, San Bernardino, Calif., Police Department.

The courses are appropriate for criminal justice personnel, law enforcement officers, police administrators, correction and campus security personnel, as well as representatives of community agencies and groups and government officials of all levels.
