International Film Seriesbegins on Sunday evening

The University's 1997 International Film Series opens Sept. 14 with the 1996 Russian film, Prisoner of the Mountains. Set in a Muslim village where two Russian soldiers are being held for ransom, this film was described by Entertainment Weekly as having "beautifully captured images of the region...a haunting film."

All films in the Sunday series are screened at 7:30 p.m. in the Trabant University Center Theatre and are free and open to the public.

On Sept. 21, the series presents the 1996 Chinese film, A Mongolian Tale. It's an epic spanning 30 years about an orphan boy and his love for his foster sister.

On Sept. 28, the 1996 Canadian film, Kissed, will be shown. It's about a young woman who takes a job in a funeral home to find the mystical connection between life and death.

The 1971 Italian film, The Garden of the Finizi-Continis, a newly restored version of Vittorio De Sica's masterpiece, will be shown on Oct. 5. The film is about the last years of an aristocratic Jewish family in Fascist Italy.

On Oct. 12, the series will present The Pillow Book, a 1997 UK export about a Japanese fashion model obsessed by calligraphy applied to the skin.

The series closes on Oct. 26 with the 1996 Chinese film, Temptress Moon, from the director of Farewell My Concubine. The film focuses on a brilliant criminal who sets out to seduce China's most beautiful woman.

The series is sponsored by the Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events, the University Honors Program and the Department of English's film program.
