A new bachelor's degree, the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies (BALS)-Social Science Concentration, is now being offered in Sussex County by the University. Courses are offered at the Carter Partnership Center on the Owens Campus of Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown and via videotape.
The new interdisciplinary degree draws on anthropology, criminal justice, economics, geography, individual and family studies, political science, psychology and sociology to create a degree that expands the student's understanding of the world, while strengthening communication skills and enhancing critical thinking.
A liberal studies degree also provides a broad general knowledge base for students interested in pursuing a master's degree in one of the emphasized disciplines.
It also offers a foundation for teaching, management and other business fields. Additionally, many students find that their previously earned college credits are applicable to the degree.
Students who have enrolled in the BALS program with a general humanities concentration, also offered in southern Delaware, have nothing but praise for the program.
In addition to the two BALS degrees, other bachelor degree programs available in Sussex County include criminal justice, engineering technology, general agriculture, nursing for the RN and hotel, restaurant and institutional management.
A bachelor's degree can be completed through full or part-time study. To consult an adviser about transferring previous credits or for more information on any of the degrees available in southern Delaware, call 855-1630 or send e-mail to CE@mvs.udel.edu
