Hazardous chemicals training

Faculty, staff and students should know their rights and responsibilities under the state of Delaware's Hazardous Chemical Information Act and University Policy No. 7-27.

The act and the policy are designed to protect individuals from the hazards associated with the use of chemicals. All University operations, including classroom activities involving the use of hazardous chemicals, are subject to this regulation. Training must be conducted before faculty, staff or students use hazardous materials, and these training sessions must include a discussion of the subjects listed on the Hazardous Chemical Training certification form.

Training documentation is required to be completed by the individuals giving and receiving training. When completed, original training forms should be sent to the Department of Occupational Health and Safety. Current copies of training certifications also should be kept in departments for one year.

Hazardous Material Safety Manuals to aid in training are available from the Department of Occupational Health and Safety. Persons are encouraged to return unwanted, undamaged books to their instructors or supervisors for reuse to conserve resources and reduce costs. A copy of the Hazardous Material Safety Manual can be found in the Department of Occupational Health and Safety web site under Right-To-Know Training (http://www/udel.edu/OHS).

The Department of Occupational Health and Safety, which will conduct training sessions for supervisors upon request, is available for consultation on the requirements. Dates for additional training sessions can be found in the 1998 Training Schedule on the Department of Occupational Health and Safety web site.

Questions concerning the act or the University policy should be directed to the Department of Occupational Health and Safety at 831-8475.
