Library to offer new database

The University of Delaware Library will provide access to LEXIS-NEXIS UNIVerse for a six-month trial period in early 1998.

UNIVerse is the newly developed web version of LEXIS-NEXIS, a large combination of individual databases. The access the library is providing is scheduled to run from Jan. 1-June 30. During this time, the library will evaluate the use of UNIVerse and solicit comments from users. Depending upon the outcome of the evaluation in relation to the cost, the library will continue to provide the service.

LEXIS-NEXIS UNIVerse offers access to more than 1 billion documents and thousands of sources. In addition to constantly updated full-text documents from thousands of general-interest wire services, newspapers and magazines from around the world, UNIVerse also includes company profiles, financial reports, government transcripts, trade journals, and academic and legal databases.

By the end of June, LEXIS-NEXIS plans to convert its entire current academic version of LEXIS-NEXIS to web access. Most of the academic version is already available, but the conversion of the remaining databases will be in progress during the trial period. Once completed, LEXIS-NEXIS UNIVerse will provide access to a rich array of databases, including full-text in many cases, in the following broad areas:

Access to LEXIS-NEXIS UNIVerse for UD faculty, staff and students will be on an unrestricted basis without limitation on the number of simultaneous users. Access is available from the Library's Web page (http://www.lib.udel.edu) under the heading "Library Networked Databases" in the Collections and Online Services section.
