Diversity commission issues statement on student paper

At the request of University President David Roselle, the matter of the Dec. 5 issue of The Review was considered by the Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity at its regular meeting yesterday.

After deliberation, the commission unanimously affirmed a statement protesting specific editorial decisions made by the editors of the student-run publication.

Upon receiving a copy of the statement, Roselle said he hoped it "would serve to ease the concerns expressed by many students, staff and faculty in the past several days."

He noted also that The Review editors had earlier apologized in print "for any confusion resulting from the advertisements and editorial pages in our Dec. 5 edition," and that the editors had indicated that the paper is currently reviewing its procedures for accepting advertising and columns.

In addition, Leo Shane III, Review editor-in-chief, has invited commentary about the issue from the campus community. Questions or comments should be sent to him at leoiii@udel.edu.

Following is the commission's statement:

"As the President's Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity, we protest the editorial decisions apparent in the Dec. 5, 1997, issue of The Review. Specifically, that issue contains two cartoons, an advertisement and a guest column that are blatantly offensive.

"We do not know whether the poor decision-making of the editorial board of The Review was prompted by malice or a lack of understanding of important issues. We do know that the content is offensive because of its mindlessness, insensitivity and bigotry, and we deeply regret that The Review has associated our institution with such wrong-headed nonsense."
