Underpass now accessible near new Newark rail station

A new underpass-for pedestrians and bicyclists under the existing Route 896 automobile railroad bridge-links the Newark Train Station and the east side of South College Avenue so that crossing the road is no longer necessary.

The project was implemented by the Department of Transportation, the City of Newark Planning Department, the Western Newark Traffic Relief Committee and its subcommittee on bicycle path implementation, chaired by Jerome R. Lewis, Institute for Public Adminsitration.

Tony Wexler, mechanical engineering, also was involved in the project.

The subcommittee is currently exploring other bicycle projects, including an east-west corridor north of Main Street and a route that would connect Lewis, Phillips and Kells parks with the train station.

"After the striping of bicycle lanes on Newark streets last summer, we are working this fall on some routes that would be off-road. These will provide safer travel for walking and bicycling in Newark," Lewis said.

Traffic in the area has increased since the SEPTA Newark-Wilmington commuter train service, began Sept. 2.
