Prof. Valbuena releases new CD-ROM on Spanish writers

A Julian Valbuena, Elias Ahuja Professor of Spanish, has collaborated with an international team of scholars on a new CD-ROM of Teatro Español del Siglo de Oro (Spanish Theatre of the Golden Age).

The CD-ROM, the first of three, contains the plays of 16 "Golden Age" writers, including Guillén del Castro, Miguel de Cervantes, Juan Bautista Diamante, Agustín Moreto, Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, Lope de Rueda and Juan Ruiz de Alcarcón.

Published by Chadwyck-Healey Inc. of Alexandria, Va.; Cambridge, England; and Madrid, Teatro Español del Siglo de Oro also is available on the World Wide Web for an annual subscription fee.

For the first time, the principal dramatic works of 16th- and 17th- century Spain have been assembled in one collection in electronic form. There are more than 800 texts and multiple search fields, enabling the user to carry out research on the works of major dramatists of the period and to view the original texts of rare first editions, many from the National Library of Madrid.

According to Valbuena, "putting this new medium at the service of universities and libraries will provide students and researchers with an unrivalled resource for study and investigation."

The second CD-ROM of the series is scheduled for release next March and the third in September.

The editors working with Valbuena were Carmen Simón Palmer of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Madrid), Maria Graziai Profeti of the University of Florence, and Kurt and Roswitha Reichenbergerof the University of Würzburg, Germany.
