This special public awareness day-celebrated in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia-encourages individuals to drive sober, to observe safe driving practices and to use safety belts and child safety seats.
All state of Delaware employees, emergency medical services personnel, hospital personnel, students and other statewide groups are encouraged to wear red clothing in observance of RED-OUT DAY.
Last year, 120 persons lost their lives on Delaware roadways, and alcohol was involved in more than 40 percent of these fatalities.
This campaign promotes safe and sober driving during the heavy traffic of the holiday season using red as the symbol of life, community energy and the holiday spirit.
During the month, there will be an emphasis on educating the public about the dangers of drinking and driving by distributing red ribbons, stickers and literature.
For more information about RED-OUT DAY or any other Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month activity, call Cindy Genau, Cooperative Extension, at 831-4973.
This program is sponsored by Cooperative Extension, Community Traffic Safety Program, Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, in cooperation with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety.
