Workshop series on society, culture

The Department of History is hosting a series of workshops this fall with speakers who will lead discussions on technology, society and culture.

Free and open to the public, the seminars are scheduled from 12:15-1:45 p.m., Tuesdays, in Room 203, Munroe Hall. Guests are invited to bring a bag lunch.

Speaking on Nov. 11, will be David Shearer, history, who will discuss "Policing the Soviet Frontier: Crime and Social Disorder in Western Siberia During the 1930s."

On Nov. 18, the speaker will be Julie Kimmel of Johns Hopkins University, talking about "The Politics of Personnel Expertise: Foundations, Universities and the Turn Towards Research-Based Knowledge, 1919-1929."

On Nov. 25, Lawrence Bird from the National Museum of American History will discuss "Design for Victory: The Poster's Place in Wartime, 1941-1945."

The series concludes Dec. 2 with "Black Women and the Harlem Renaissance," presented by Carole Marks, Black American Studies Program.

Skating classes are open to public

Public skating sessions at the Fred Rust Ice Arena are designed for skaters of all ages and abilities. Sessions are offered each week from 8-10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, and from 1-3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Cost is $4 per person, with rental skates available for an additional $2 per pair. A rate of $3.50 per person is offered for groups of l0 or more.

This year, the arena is offering preferred skater cards for $35. Good for 10 public skating sessions, the cards offer a $5 savings off the regular admission price.

Cards are validated with each use and when completed are entered into drawings for prizes.

Gospel concert scheduled Nov. 23

The University of Delaware Gospel Choir will present its fall concert, "Power in Praise," at 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23, in Pearson Hall auditorium. In addition the free, public concert will feature dancers, poetry, the Gospel Choir Steppers and other collegiate choirs.

The 11th hour of the 11th day

A Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony by two cadets representing the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, on the south side of Memorial Hall. Following the playing of "Taps," Timothy Brooks, student life and a veteran of the Vietnam War, will speak. The ceremony will conclude with a drill demonstration by the Pershing Rifles.

At approximately noon, the annual MIA/POW run will begin, according to Sean Gallagher, cadet officer in charge of the event. Runners carrying the American flag and the MIA/POW flag will make 15-minute loops of the campus for 24 hours. Anyone wishing to participate is encouraged to join the runners. Proceeds from the run will be donated to VFW Post 475 in Newark to be distributed to needy families of former MIAs and POWs, Gallagher said.
