'Music in the Library' is focus of current exhibition

Music in the Library" is the title of an exhibit now on view on the first floor of the Morris Library. The exhibition, which will run through Jan. 11, highlights the variety of musical materials in the library's collection.

Included in the display are musical scores-both classical and popular, 19th-century sheet music, facsimiles of early music manuscripts, discographies and books about composers, musicians and music of all periods.

Musical scores encompass composers from Bach to the Beatles and include scores for single instruments as well as for ensembles. Facsimiles of original manuscripts of early religious pieces and reproductions of the works of the great orchestral composers can be found in the library.

The Special Collections Department holds original manuscripts and scores, as well as printed material relating to music.

Of particular note are the scores written by Paul Bowles, the contemporary author whose papers are held in Special Collections, and a small collection of manuscript scores by the early 20th-century Catalan composer, Ricardo Vines.

Reflecting the wide range of music-related courses taught at UD, the library continues to collect in the field of music. Within the past few months, new acquisitions have ranged from historical works to biographies of musicians to discography to studies of world music.

Other resources for music study at UD are videotapes and laserdiscs of musical theatre and performance, available in the Media Services Department of the Morris Library for viewing in the library and in classes. The Music Resources Center in the Amy E. du Pont Music building also houses a collection of sound and video recordings and multiple copies of scores for performance.

The display was curated by Iris Snyder, special collections.
