Author readings to fight hunger
A variety of writers who reside in Newark will join the
nation's literary community as it unites to fight hunger during
"Sharing Our Strengths, Writers Harvest: The National Reading"
will be on Thursday, Nov. 14.
The UD event, which is one of 500 planned nationwide to
benefit local hunger organizations, will feature published crime
novelist Sharyn McCrumb; Cruce Stark, English; David Robertson of
the Newark Arts Alliance; and English graduate students Robby
Barringer and Devon Miller-Duggan. All will read from their
original works, including both poetry and fiction.
Events planned elsewhere will feature literary stars such as
poet Maya Angelou and novelists John Grisham and John Updike
reading from their works in bookstores, community centers and on
college campuses.
Since its inception in 1992, the National Reading has raised
and distributed $280,000 to anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs
throughout the United States.
The Newark event begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 of Wolf
Hall. The event is open to the public and suggested donations are
$3 for students and $5 for adults.
The UD chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English
honor society, is sponsoring the event.
