Graduation day for students of Employment Connections

Employment Connections graduates at the Sept. 12 ceremony in
Alison Hall are (seated from left) Kimberly Wallace, Stephanie
Johnson, Pamela Zuppo, (standing from left) Carolyn Belton, Julie
Cunningham, Virginia Garrett, Zakkiyya Mu'Min, Josie Linton and
Katrina Harris with project coordinator Mary Moynihan and
instructor Gus Nyekan. Not present is Drexann Holmes.
The pilot program was a joint project of the Center for
Disabilities Studies and Chimes Delaware under a state welfare
reform program, A Better Chance. The goal is to give persons on
public assistance specialized training and the tools they need to
develop their independence.
For eight weeks, students received classroom training at the
University three days a week and had internships two days a week
through Chimes Delaware, which serves persons with developmental
disabilities. The students are then qualified for employment as
service workers for community-based, social service programs.
