Coming home: Operatic soloists & sisters to perform next month

     Newark natives Katherine and Kristine Ciesinski will return
to their hometown Sunday, Nov. 3, for a duo recital at 4 p.m. in
Mitchell Hall.
     Having reached fame independently, the two enjoy sharing
the stage.
     Katherine's major operatic credits include two Metropolitan
Opera productions. Kristine is widely known for her breathtaking
portrayal of Salome and has taken part in 10 different stagings
of the work. The sisters' Newark performance is sponsored by the
UD Performing Arts Series. Individual tickets are $15 for the
general public, $10 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior
citizens and $6 for students.

Katherine Ciesinski

     The New York Times has called Katherine Ciesinski "a singer
of rare communicative presence and a musician of discrimination
and intelligence." She is an accomplished mezzosoprano who
pursues a fully integrated career, exploring the world of today's
composers as well as the established classics of the lyric stage.
     At the Metropolitan Opera, she has appeared as Judith in
Bluebeard's Castle and as Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann.
     Additional roles include Cassandre in Les Troyens at Covent
Garden, Adalgisa in Norma with the Scottish Opera., Laura in La
Gioconda, Waltraute in Ring Cycle and Dulcinee in Don Quichotte
with the San Francisco Opera and many more.
     She has performed with the world's leading orchestras,
including the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras, the
symphonies of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Houston and many
famed orchestras in Europe.


Kristine Ciesinski

     American soprano Kristine Ciesinski "has the formidable
vocal and acting qualities of a great opera tragedian," according
to the Mnchner Abendzeitung.
     Her recent seasons have included performances of the great
operatic heroines with which she has become identified,
highlighted by Marie in Wozzeck for the English National Opera
and the Frankfurt State Opera, Judith in Bluebeard's Castle and
Die  Frau in Schoneberg's Erwartung for the Leipzig Opera and the
title role in a new Werner Schrter production of Shostakovich's
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Frankfurt State Opera.
     In 1994, she sang with the Leipzig Opera in performances of
Bluebeard's Castle and Erwartung and for the title role of
Salome.
     In 1991-92, she made her debut in two of the world's
leading opera houses: La Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera-
Bastille, where she sang the title role in Lady Macbeth of
Mtsensk.
     On her first compact disc, recently released by TER, she
sings the role of Mrs. Maurrant in Kurt Weill's Street Scene. She
also gives numerous concerts and recitals. She made her debut as
a soloist at the Promenade Concerts in London in Janacek's
Glagolithic Mass.
