Wellness Works
I was first diagnosed with hypoglycemia-low blood sugar-
after taking a glucose tolerance test when I was a sophomore in
high school. To maintain a proper blood sugar level, I was
assigned a strict diet that encouraged many small meals high in
protein during the day and discouraged foods with sugar or heavy
amounts of starch.
"Although I had read about hypoglycemia and have adhered to
my diet, I wished to continue to educate myself further and to
learn about advances in monitoring this condition.
"Putting my Wellness Dollars to their best use, I consulted
with Marianne Carter, a nutritionist in the Wellness Program,
about my daily eating regimen. First, we analyzed my diet, meal
by meal, in conjunction with my daily schedule. Then, she offered
suggestions on portion sizes and on foods that would
nutritionally complement what I was eating-for example, a protein
product that could be served with a carbohydrate. She also
recommended "quick" foods that would balance my blood sugar level
and could be eaten throughout the day.
"Meeting with Marianne helped me refocus on my objectives of
continuing to maintain a proper diet, and, if possible, improving
it. Her recommendations provided the initial steps needed to
achieve my goal."
