Make a Difference Day food drive scheduled Oct. 21-26

National Make a Difference Day is an occasion for the whole
University community to join together to help others, along with
millions of volunteers across the country, according to Nancy
Geist Giacomini, assistant dean of students at the University.
"Our goal is to have the largest canned food drive in the
history of the University, to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware.
The event will kick off on Monday, Oct. 21, culminating on Make A
Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 26. Since this is Parents Day, we
are inviting parents as well as students, staff and faculty to
participate by donating cans of food," Giacomini said.
Student organizations, including the Resident Student
Association, Greek Affairs and the Delaware Undergraduate Student
Congress are being contacted for help in the project. Offices and
departments are encouraged to donate canned foods.
There will be convenient drop-off sites across campus to
collect donations, including at the Delaware Stadium before the
game with James Madison, Giacomini said.
Make a Difference Day, initiated by USA Weekend and by
Points of Light Foundation, is a national call to action for
volunteers. Participants are encouraged to send descriptions of
their projects to USA Weekend, and 10 honorees will be selected
for $2,000 donations to their chosen charities.
