Faculty & Staff Assistance Program sets fall sessions
Lunch and learn
The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program is offering a
series of Lunch and Learn programs to University faculty and
staff members designed to assist individuals in maintaining a
healthy holistic lifestyle addressing both emotional and physical
issues.
All workshops are from noon to 1 p.m. Minimum enrollment is
needed for each program, and pre-enrollment required. To
register, call 831-8308.
Beyond stress
The inability to sleep, constant fatigue, poor
concentration, feeling keyed up and other symptoms might be
warning signals that you or someone you care about has moved
beyond stress into the areas of depression or anxiety disorders.
These disorders are not personal weaknesses but are common,
treatable illnesses, often with physiological bases.
Learn to understand the common stresses in our lives, signs
and symptoms of anxiety and depression disorders, how anxiety and
depression affect work and our personal lives and, most
importantly, how to get help, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Room 219
of the Trabant University Center. Presenter is Crystal Hayman
Simms, from the Mental Health Association of Delaware.
Deadline: Oct. 14
Caring for older family members
This information session discusses services available to
older family members. It is vitally important for caregivers to
be knowledgeable about services available for the elderly and
support systems for caregivers. A representative from the
Delaware Division of Aging will present information on Wednesday,
Nov. 20, in Room 219 of the Trabant University Center.
Deadline: Nov. 18
Positive parenting techniques
Raising children is one of life's most wonderful
experiences, but it can be challenging and frustrating at the
same time. We must employ sensitive and sensible approaches to
raising responsible, self-assured and happy children.
Children experience a wide range of difficult situations,
including lack of friends, poor self-image, sibling rivalry,
hyperactivity, sadness, fearfulness, eating disorders, nervous
habits, aggressive behavior, defiance, sleep problems, lying,
learning disabilities, drugs and violence.
All of these experiences have an impact on how children
communicate and interact with parents, as well as with the
community at large. On Wednesday, Dec. 18, in Room 219 of the
Trabant University Center, a discussion will be led by Carla
London, a skills educator for Chester County Department of
Children, Youth and Families.
Deadline: Dec. 16
Self-help assistance
Taking care of yourself
Taking care of yourself requires an active role by the
individual. This semester, the Faculty and Staff Assistance
Program is offering several self-help groups designed to provide
education, support and encouragement by sharing information and
experiences amongst individuals involved in a common issue.
The self-help groups are:
Separated/divorced persons
Sessions deal with issues of transition, adjustments related
to coping and grieving with loss and realistic vs. idealistic
expectations of the process.
Relapse prevention
Focues on issues related to recovery from substance abuse.
Menopause support
Discussion on issues of perimenopause and post-menopause as
well as alternative menopause resources.
Caregivers support group
Deals with concerns about caring for an aging and/or
terminally ill family member, friend or other loved one.
