Rusted Root in concert Oct. 24
Rusted Root fans can hear songs from Remember, the band's
newest release, on Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Bob Carpenter
Center. The new CD, to be released Oct. 8, features hypnotic
rhythms and percussion jams combined with emotionally charged
lyrics and vocals by Michael Glabicki.
In Remember, its second Mercury release, the sextet pushes
both its audience and its music further into unexplored
territory, combining influences from African, Middle Eastern,
Latin American and Eastern music and spirituality. The result is
a rich tapestry, alternately glimmering and brooding, luminous
and mysterious. Tracks include "Faith I Do Believe," "Heaven,"
"Sister Continue," "Voodoo" and "Silver-n-Gold."
As on its critically acclaimed major label debut, When I
Woke, which has sold more than 1 million copies, Rusted Root
takes traditional, uniquely American song structure and
embellishes it with a dazzling array of compositional and
textural elements.
Rusted Root got its start near Pittsburgh in the late 1980s
when Glabicki, lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist, met Liz
Berlin, a percussionist who sings supporting vocals. The two
performed together for awhile before adding the rhythm section of
jazz aficionado Patrick Norman and Jim Donovan, a classical music
performance major at the University of Pittsburgh.
In 1993, John Buynak, wind, percussion, hand drums and
supporting vocals, joined the group along with Jim DiSpirito,
percussion and hand drums.
Once the ensemble was complete the band became a popular
opening act for such groups as the Allman Brothers, Jimmy Page
and Robert Plant, The Grateful Dead and The Dave Matthews Band.
