Library Preservation Awareness Campaign begins next week

The University of Delaware Library will hold a Preservation
Awareness Campaign from Oct. 7-11. "The focus is to raise
awareness, for all who use and support the University of Delaware
Library collections, on the causes and prevention of the
deterioration of library materials," Susan Brynteson, director of
libraries, said. Preservation of library materials includes four
aspects-cost, awareness, responsibility and effort.
Coordinated by the Library Preservation Unit, the campaign
will include an exhibition on the first floor in the information
area of Morris Library that will be on view from Oct. 7-Jan. 22.
The exhibition includes themes such as the enemies of books, the
cost of carelessness and preserving the past for the future.
Viewers will be able to see examples of damage caused by varying
factors such as water, food, insects, light, and improper care
and handling, along with solutions to these preservation
challenges.
During the campaign, an educational, brown-bag lunch film
series open to the University community will be held from noon-
12:30 p.m., in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room of the Morris
Library. Scheduled are:
Slow Fires, about the deterioration of intellectual
   documents, Tuesday, Oct. 8,
Japanese Style Papermaking II, showing the production
of small sheets using traditional equipment, Wednesday, Oct.
   9, and
Elements of Book Conservation: Manuscript Books,
showing the conservation of a 15th century book, Thursday,
   Oct. 10.
     From 1-3 p.m., on Oct.8, 9, and 10, representatives of the
Library Preservation Unit will staff a table, "'Dr. Book' Table:
Preservation Out of the Lab," which will offer library users the
opportunity to ask questions regarding library preservation
issues and their own concerns.
In addition, the library will hold a "Save the Books"
session during the campaign week to discourage library users from
bringing food and drink in the Morris Library beyond the glass
doors.
