Hockey instruction, fall programs in ice center
New programs in instructional hockey and the traditionally
popular community ice skating programs are planned this fall at
the University's Ice Skating Science Development Center.
"The arena has planned the best fall season ever with the
best programs, teachers and facilities," Elaine Ahern, recreation
and intramural programs, said.
Skating
Offered this fall will be a parent/tot class for children
under the age of 3. The class differs from the beginner program
because children enrolled will learn to skate with parental
supervision. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday
mornings, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 22.
The beginner program, also offered this fall, is a four-
level, learn-to-skate program that teaches fundamental skating
skills to both children and adults. The classes begin Tuesday,
Oct. 8, and are offered on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and
Saturday mornings.
Community Class Basic Badge classes teach Alpha through
Delta Ice Skating Institute skills, also beginning Tuesday, Oct.
8, and offered on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and Saturday
mornings.
Current skaters who would like to enhance their skills can
take classes in Off-Ice Creative Movement and Dance. Those
classes are offered on Saturday mornings, beginning Sept. 28.
Additionally, a new precision skating team, the Small
Wonders, will be offered for skaters who have passed beginner
level four and are between the ages of 6 and 10. Open practices
will be held Mondays, Sept. 23 and 30.
Ice Hockey
The UD's extensive ice hockey program now consists of
instructional, competitive and open hockey programs for youth and
adults.
Classes in instructional hockey for beginners are held
Saturday mornings, beginning Sept. 28. In-house and high school
leagues are available to players who have completed a beginning
hockey program. Leagues for skaters ages 9 and under and for
those in the 10-to-13-year-old age groups are under way, with
high school leagues beginning Sunday, Oct. 13.
The arena also will sponsor a youth travel team that will
compete in the Delaware Valley Hockey League. The team will
travel for 12 out of 24 games. Teams have been formed, but there
are still openings in the 9-to-10-year-old squirt team.
For adults, the Delaware Senior Hockey Association and the
Over-35 League offer non-check teams that will begin competition
in early October. Players can register as individuals for either
team or register as a team for the senior hockey association.
Brochures detailing all of the ice arena programs are
available at the Blue Ice Arena, telephone 831-2868.
