$160,000 goal: Campaign kickoff set Oct. 1 in Carpenter Center

     Food, fun and entertainment will be offered to United Way
solicitors at the University's 1996 United Way Campaign kickoff,
scheduled at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
     Representatives from units throughout the University have
been invited to help launch the campuswide effort that runs from
Oct. 1-23.
     The program will include a screening of the University's
1996 United Way video, which features more than a dozen members
of the campus community, and a reception for solicitors and
guests in the Bob Carpenter Club starting at approximately 4 p.m.
In addition, the results of the University's Pacesetters Campaign
will be announced.
     The Pacesetters' Drive represents contributions from senior-
level administrators who made their contributions prior to the
official kickoff to support and promote the 1996 United Way
campaign.
      As in past years, the University will conduct an incentive
raffle program to encourage employees to give to or increase
their United Way contributions.
     This year's raffle incentives include a donation by Roberta
Campbell, Delaware '65, president of Campbell Travel Center, who
has contributed an $800 credit toward any other travel/vacation
arrangements made through that company. Travel arrangements must
be scheduled within six months of the raffle drawing. There is no
cash equivalent for any unused features.
     
     University trips:
        Continuing Education has donated two tickets for motor
   coach transportation to New York City for two.
        Conferences and Centers has donated weekend
   accommodations for two at the Virden Center in Lewes.
     
     Other University incentives:
        Two one-year memberships to the Blue and Gold Club, a
   Blue and Gold Club dinner for two and a $25 gift certificate
   in UD Dining Flex dollars, from Dining Services;
        Taste of Brandywine membership, from the U-Del Credit
   Union;
        Free linen services at the Carpenter Sports Building,
   ice skating passes and a one-year pool membership, from
   Recreation and Intramural Programs;
        Two UD die cast metal banks (model T car shape) and
   two UD sweatshirts, from the University Bookstore;
        Two gift certificates for a performance at the Bob
   Carpenter Center, from the Bob Carpenter Center;
        Professional Theatre Training Program season tickets
   for two, from the Department of Theatre;
        One 8-x-10 color photograph and a YoUDee Gram, from
   the Office of Public Relations;
        One week at a 4-H camp for one child and two Delaware
   4-H cookbooks, from Cooperative Extension;
        One free gold parking permit or equivalent credit
   toward the cost of a gate or reserve parking, from the
   Department of Public Safety;
        Two sets of four basketball tickets, from
   Intercollegiate Athletics;
        A two-night accommodation at the University Guest
   Apartments, from Housing and Conference Services; and
        Performing Arts Series tickets, including two tickets
   for two performances in the Blue and Gold Series, two tickets
   for five performances in the Junior Series and two tickets
   for five performances in the general series, from the Office
   of Alumni and University Relations.
     
     Other raffle incentives:
        Two complimentary family memberships for the Delaware
   Nature Society;
        Two Wintherthur Yuletide  Candlelight Tour tickets;
   and
        Two passes to Longwood Gardens.
     
     Additional incentives for Southern Delaware employee donors:
        One day of overnight accommodations with continental
   breakfast for two at the Hotel du Pont; and
        Five pairs of tickets to the University's Summer Arts
   Festival.
     
     Eligibility requirements:
     The eligibility requirements for the incentive program are
        $5 per pay deduction ($120 total) for credit for $800
   trip through Campbell Travel.
        $3 per pay deduction ($72 total) for University of
   Delaware trips and
        $1 per pay deduction ($24 total) for all other
   incentives.
     
     About the raffle:
     The raffle drawing will be held in November. Winners will be
invited to attend the Solicitors Thank You reception hosted by
President David P. Roselle.
     To participate in the raffle, an individual's contribution
must be given to the unit solicitor and received in the Cashier's
Office by the close of business on Oct. 23, the final day of the
campaign.
     Participants should note that the Internal Revenue Service
requires that employees who wish to deduct their full United Way
contribution on an itemized tax return must decline to
participate in the raffle in writing when they turn in their
pledge cards or donations.
     For employees who take part in the raffle and itemize tax
deductions, the specific amounts contributed to the United Way to
become eligible for the raffle cannot be deducted on one's tax
return.
