Three outstanding UD student-athletes-Melissa Hefner (women's lacrosse), Greg Tokarsky (swimming) and Linda Boose (track and field distance running)-have been named America East Scholar-Athletes. Each has been honored as the top scholar-athlete in their respective sports, selected from among nominees from the 10 America East institutions.
With four UD student-athletes honored during the 1996-97 academic year, including Beth Hall in women's soccer, Delaware had more than any other America East institution except Boston University with five.
Hefner, a May graduate with a degree in physical education and a 3.42 grade point average, led UD to the 1997 America East women's lacrosse title and a rank of 15 nationally. She was a two-time Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-American and was the 1997 America East Player of the Year. She is a current member of the U.S. Women's Lacrosse developmental squad.
Tokarsky, who will be a junior biology major this fall with a 3.5 grade point average, led UD to the America East men's swimming title last winter, placing third in the 800 freestyle relay, fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, sixth in the 200 freestyle relay and 11th in the 1,650 freestyle at the conference meet.
Boose, a May graduate with a degree in biology and a 3.93 grade point average, had seven top-10 finishes in conference championship competitions. In the past season, she placed seventh in both the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters at the America East outdoor track and field championships and fifth in the mile run at the indoor championships. She was named to the GTE/CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) District II Academic All-American at-large second team in May.
