Poetry reading set for Sept. 19

Gibbons Ruark, English, will hold a free, public poetry reading at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19.

"Companion Pieces: Poems Old and New" will be presented in Room 110 of Memorial Hall. Ruark will read selections from all of his books plus several new and uncollected poems.

Ruark's poems have been published widely in such magazines as The New Republic, The New Yorker, Poetry and Ploughshares. Currently, his poem, "Househusbandry," is included in the summer issue of Shenandoah, The Washington and Lee University Review.

His poems also have appeared in numerous anthologies and texts and have won many awards including a Pushcart Prize.

The recipient of three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Ruark has published the books, A Program for Survival, Reeds and Keeping Company.

His most recent book, Rescue the Perishing, was published in 1991 by Louisiana State University Press, which also will publish his new book, New and Selected Poems in 1999.
