New exhibition set for library

"Self Works: Diaries, Scrapbooks and Other Autobiographical Efforts" is the title of an exhibition to be featured Aug. 19 through Dec. 18 in the Special Exhibition Gallery of the Morris Library.

Curated by L. Rebecca Johnson Melvin, associate librarian, the exhibition will draw from UD's rich collection of manuscript diaries and other sources that illustrate "self-writing."

Self-writing has had an interesting evolution since Samuel Pepys began keeping a diary in 1659. The "self" has continued to be an obvious topic of interest for writers.

The exhibition, an historical survey of "selfish" genres, will include examples of daily logs and record-keeping journals, contemplative and spiritual confessions, travel narratives, reflective and introspective writings, retrospective memoirs and creativ e efforts, such as journal/scrapbooks. The intersection of these genres with factors such as gender, place and time highlights the fascinating historical and creative documentation to be found in "Self Works."

An exhibition program and reception, sponsored by the University of Delaware Library Associates and open to the public by reservation, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room, Morris Library. To request a printed inv itation, call 831-2231 or send e-mail to UDLA@mvs.udel.edu
