New student experiences

Two students from Dickinson High School-Julie Tanpitukpong and Alton Fox-are sampling campus life in Summer College, and it's living up to their expectations and more.

Both had been on campus previous summers-Tanpitukpong for the Governor's School for Excellence and Fox as a participant in the UD FAME (Forum for the Advancement of Minority Engineers) program, but agreed that Summer College had a totally different atmosp here and provided a new experience.

Tanpitukpong was encouraged to attend by a former Summer College student. "She told me I'd always regret it if I didn't go, that she had a really good experience at Summer College. She made some good friends from different places whom she still sees," she said.

Fox said he felt Summer College was a great opportunity for him to experience college life so that he knows what expect as a freshman. "When you go to college, you have the freedom to make choices, and I'm learning how to handle that in Summer College," h e said.

They are both enthusiastic about the program but agree the college courses they are taking are "tough-much harder than expected, and that the classes move at a quick pace." In a few weeks' time, they've learned that balancing work and fun is important, bu dgeting time is essential, and that group studying helps a lot.

On the campus life side of the ledger, the RAs, working with hall director Kevin Connell, have been outstanding, according to the two students. The RAs are accessible and friendly and plan many activities from scavenger hunts to tennis tournaments.

Stimulating and challenging classes, day trips to cities, landmarks and the beach, hanging out with new friends, sports and activities keep both students busy and on the go, and that's the way they like it.

What do they both miss? It was unanimous-"Home cooking!"
