For 18 years, the University has been the site for the Governor's School for Excellence, held each summer for outstanding high school students who are entering their junior year in the fall. This year, 132 Delaware students, nominated by their principles or guidance counselors, participated in the program from July 20-26.
According to Tish Szymurski, continuing education and campus director of the program, the school encourages educational and personal growth with a focus on the development of leadership skills, problem solving and decision making. The program provides opp ortunities for talented students to learn to make the most of their potential by interacting with each other and with faculty and professionals, and by learning about the options and career choices open to them.
In addition to group activities, such as the World Game that introduces them to international issues, the students are divided into four areas of concentration- academic, music, visual arts and drama. Each interest group receives instruction on campus in small master classes. Field trips also are part of the schedule, such as a trip to New York to see Chicago for the drama group and trips to Lewes and to Legislative Hall in Dover for the academic group.
In the evenings, the entire group assembled for educational and fun activities, including a program on censorship issues, a Summer Olympics-type event, concert performances and a karaoke party.
