The Eastern Apicultural Society will hold its 1997 programs from Aug. 11-13, in Clayton Hall. There will be a short course for those with limited experience and those who want to start beekeeping as a hobby. Intermediate and advance level sessions also will be offered.

If you love watching those graceful men and women sweep across the floor in the ballroom dancing competitions you've seen on television, you'll have a chance to see them live at the Bob Carpenter Center from Aug. 8-10, when the 1997 national ballroom dancing championship competition comes to the campus.
USA DANCESPORT, also known as the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association, will serve as host of the national championships. The public is invited to view competitions scheduled at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8-9, and at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10. Tickets are $10 for Friday night, $20 for Saturday night (with special guests Chuck Danza and Serena Lecca, one of the hottest Latin couples and winners of the international Rising Star competition) and $18 for Sunday. All-day tickets for Friday and Saturday also can be purchased.
At the event, national champions, as well as all representatives to the world amateur dancesport championships, will be selected. Dance categories range from the swing to the hustle and everything in between. Dancers of all ages compete.
Currently, a movement is afoot to have ballroom dancing officially recognized as an Olympic sport, according to Vivian Beiswenger, chair of the national championship committee. A formal application is pending before the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Many of the dancers who compete in Newark will be staying in town on Monday, Aug. 11, for the organization's first International Friendship Festival.
Tickets for the public events are available at the Bob Carpenter Center box office or by calling (215) 855-2711.
Adults 50 and over who enjoy new ideas, new friends and new experiences are invited to attend an open house at the Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, July 30, at Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., on the UD Wilmington Campus.
Brief tours of the facilities, a preview of classes and light refreshments will be offered.
The Academy of Lifelong Learning is a membership organization that provides opportunities for those 50 and over to learn, teach and travel with their peers. The only requirements for admission are interest in a continuing educational experience, support of the programs through participation and a membership fee. Courses meet weekdays at Arsht Hall.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 8, more than 140 courses, taught by ALL members, will be available for fall, including such topics as computers, current events, sciences, economics, history, literature, languages, music and yoga.
Social lectures, musical programs, study trips and social events also are planned by and for ALL members.
Membership for the 1997-1998 year is $230, which covers up to five classes each semester and many activities.
A one-semester membership is available for $135. ALL will accept in-person and mailed registrations for fall semester classes from Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 8. Registration hours are 9 a.m. to noon.
