'Messenger' wins top honor

The University of Delaware Messenger, the quarterly tabloid distributed to 87,000 University alumni and friends, received a first place award in a national communications contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women.

Presenting the award in the nonprofit, magapaper/tabloid category at the annual conference June 21 in St. Paul, Minn., the judges said the Messenger was an "attractive publication with interesting graphic colors" that provided good news summaries and "stories that are fun to read."

Cornelia Weil, public relations, managing editor of the Messenger, and Lane McLaughlin, visual media design, is art director.

Approximately 1,300 entries were forwarded by state affiliates to the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) for judging in the national competition. Entry categories include news reporting, electronic media, public relations materials, feature stories, books and photography.

An organization of working women and men journalists in all fields of communications, the NFPW sponsors literacy events with local newspapers, educational seminars, youth communications contests, college scholarships and career-related activities.
