Students bank on 'real world' approach

Robert Schweitzer, finance, teaches a class at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, which has been held on the Newark campus since 1985. The school, which has been in existence for more than 60 years, is sponsored by the American Bankers Association an d offers a three-year certificate program, using a "real world," problem-solving approach.

According to Schweitzer, who coordinates the program on campus, more than 335 executive bankers from all over the United States and from abroad are enrolled in the program, which covers all facets of the banking profession. The bankers are on campus for e ight days of concentrated classes from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. In addition to summer classes, the bankers work on extension problems during the year and are required to write a thesis.

UD faculty teaching at Stonier were Schweitzer, who taught a business and economics course and an asset liability management case, and Donald Puglisi, MBNA America Business Professor of Finance, who taught a course in derivatives.
