Bill Lawson, philosophy, and James Newton, Black American Studies Program, will participate in the second program of a three-part lecture discussion series, "Hip, Hop, Rap and Cultural Values," scheduled at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 12, in the Heritage Pavilion at the African Festival in Brandywine Park, Wilmington.
Sponsored by the Delaware Humanities Forum and the Christina Cultural Arts Center, the free public series brings together members of the community to discuss the issues raised in the current debate about the role of rap music in society.
Lawson will speak on the history of the image of women in music and how rap music has built on historical precedents regarding attitudes toward women.
Newton will be among the panelists on the program, with representatives of the Christina Cultural Arts Center and Zeneca.
