Prospective students receive warm summertime welcome

Summertime is busy time for members of the admissions staff as they play host to high school students and their families during University of Delaware Preview Days. Approximately 6,500 attended Preview Days last year and even more are expected this year, according to Harriet Saxton, who coordinates the program.

Other admissions staff serving on the Preview Days committee are Gwen Davis, Joyce Hastings, Marianne Johnson, Christine Lawson, Lynn Loper and Robert Snyder.

"This is an opportunity to showcase the many facets of University life to interested students and their parents. It's 'one-stop shopping' where they can learn about individual undergraduate colleges, support services, activities, residence life, the libra ry, campus ministries and career services from those in the know," Saxton said.

Held in the Bob Carpenter Center, Preview Days is a University information fair with programs targeted to inform prospective students about UD and all that it has to offer. In addition to presentations, there are information tables with literature and rep resentatives from colleges and other areas of University life whom prospective students and parents can informally meet and talk to, Saxton said.

Delaware Preview Days are scheduled Fridays and Saturdays, July 11-12, 18-19 and 25-26. An admissions program is held from 2-2:45 p.m., followed by an optional Honors Program presentation. Tours, which are important in giving prospective students and thei r parents a feeling of the beauty and many features of the campus, are offered at 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.

Those attending Preview Days are welcomed by either President David P. Roselle or Provost Mel Schiavelli and by Frederic A. Siegel, enrollment services. An admissions presentation follows.

One of the highlights of the day is a faculty/student panel. Students introduce themselves, say where they are from, why they chose Delaware and talk about college life. Faculty members discuss teaching and the academic side of the University. This is fol lowed by a question-and-answer period. This interaction with students and faculty is important for those interested in applying at UD, Saxton said.

After the general program is the optional Honors Program presentation at 2:45 p.m., coordinated by Louis Hirsh, admissions. After an informal summary of the program, a panel of honors students and faculty talk about their experiences and field questions.< p> Delaware Preview Days provide a real opportunity for the University, its faculty and students, to meet with prospective students and their families, and it is an important factor for many of those who make the decision to apply to UD, Saxton said.
