Photos on exhibit in Clayton Hall

Photos by Carol Thompson of Philadelphia are on display now through July 31 in the Clayton Hall Gallery.

The photos consist of disparate elements, including Greek architecture and sculpture and more modern objects that suggest the ephemeral and eternal.

Thompson often addresses issues that surround the loss of members of her family as part of the human condition. In the process, she investigates how we hold and are held by material objects, both literally and symbolically. The hand, for instance, can rep resent a series of complex relationships depending on what it holdsÐa concept she demonstrates in her photos, "Child in the Moon," "Circe & Her Crystal Ball" and "The Telephone Call."

Thompson's carefully choreographed dance of pictures transcends traditional photography as she incorporates innovative techniques. Much of her imagery comes from her travel around the world, including a recent trip to Italy. She also includes images of he r own drawings and sculpture, either with a camera or a scanner. She then cuts and pasts her images by hand or with the aid of computers and other digital equipment. Finally, the prints are made using an inkjet process.

Thompson has had numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the East Coast. She also has been featured in several publications including SHOTS and Photo Review. She received her master's of fine arts degree from Temple University's Tyler School of Art .

The Clayton Hall Gallery is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. For variable weekend hours, call 831-1259.
