Tours of excavations in progress are being conducted this summer at the Read House in New Castle. "Unearthing New Castle's Past: Archaeology in the Read House Garden" continues daily, Tuesdays through Saturdays, through July 24, (except July 4) at the historic site at 42 The Strand.Visitors can witness the excavation work of students, under the direction of Lu Ann De Cunzo, UD anthropology. The joint project involves the University's Department of Anthropology and the Historical Society of Delaware.
Formal tours are at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays-Fridays, and each half hour, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Saturdays. The tours are free and open to the public.
"Beneath Our Feet," a special public tour of the archaeology in the Read House Garden, will be conducted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, July 19. The program will include special archaeology demonstrations for adults and children.

The local National Issues Forums Network is sponsoring its 1997 NIF Public Policy Institute from July 24-26 at the University's Colburn Laboratory in Newark.Participants will learn how to organize and lead public forums and study circles, practice moderating skills and gain an understanding of how to dissect and frame issues, regardless of topics. There also will be information on utilizing the forum technique to help address issues that concern family and the community.
The theme, "Reaching for Common Ground," features a public community forum entitled, "How Can We be Fair? The Future of Affirmative Action," which will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 24, at the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchmans Rd., Newark.
