AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONS

The University of Delaware has won the America East Commissioner's Cup for the sixth straight year. The honor is awarded annually to the member institution that earns the most points through regular season and championship performance during the academic year.

Scoring is based on final conference regular season standings and how the teams finish in championship tournaments in the conference's 10 team sports-baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, field hockey, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and women's volleyball.

Points also are awarded for team championship finish in the 11 individual sportsÐmen's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, men's indoor track, women's indoor track, men's outdoor track, women's outdoor track, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's tennis and women's tennis.

Delaware earned 455 points to successfully defend the title it has kept since the 1991-92 season. The Blue Hens won three individual sport championshipsÐmen's tennis, men's swimming and women's swimmingÐduring the academic year. UD also captured the baseball regular season title and women's lacrosse championship title.

Boston University (398 points) finished second for the fourth consecutive year.

NATIONAL HONOR

UD women's lacrosse player Liza Shoemaker was named to the U.S. National Women's Lacrosse Team by the U.S. National Team selection committee. A senior next year, Shoemaker scored 21 goals and added seven assists in helping the Blue Hens reach its first-ever America East title.

Shoemaker also was named the Most Outstanding Player in the America East Tournament.

Shoemaker will play on the U.S. squad, which is the three-time defending champion of the quadrennial World Cup. Twelve members of last year's squad were selected for this year's team. Shoemaker was one of only six new members chosen.
