"Name That Stall," a residence life program, was recognized with an Innovative Program/Activity Award by the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) June 8-10 at its regional meeting in Buffalo.
The award is presented to colleges and universities for innovation and creativity, contributions to students and/or professional staff development and the institution and timeliness of topic.
"Name That Stall," conducted in 1996 in the Russell C residence hall at UD, allowed students who attended residence life activities the opportunity to enter a drawing to have a residence hall location or applianceŠsuch as a lounge, stairwell or washing machineŠnamed after them.
Each of the nine selected students was recognized with temporary individual nameplates affixed on the areas or items that were named in their honor. As a result of the program's success, UD officials are considering expansion of the effort beyond the Russell C residence hall.
"The originality of this program," Cynthia Cummings, residence life, said, "is surpassed only by its success in encouraging student involvement. Although many of our programs have received national recognition for encouraging academic achievement, diversity and community service, it's also nice to receive an award for a program that is just plain fun."
In March, five other residence life programs were cited as "models" by the American Colleges Personnel Association Commission III.
The Office of Residence Life sponsored more than 1,200 events during the 1996-97 academic year. Programming included faculty presentations, diversity workshops, discussions on ethics and values, community development events, intramural sports, floor meetings and cultural trips.
