Community Police grads recognized
University police officers (from left) Bill Staker,
Emmett Robinson and Paige Seppanen recently completed the
Community Policing Certificate Program, conducted through
the University's Division of Continuing Education. The UD
officers and others from several municipalities were
recognized at the spring graduation ceremonies, held in May
at the Newark Police Station.
According to James Flatley, assistant director in
Public Safety, "The University stresses the importance of
training for all of its officers. Education is a key and
helps broaden our officers' knowledge and ability to assist
the community we serve. There is a wide variety of subjects
in the certificate program. We have had other officers go
through this training in the past, and we will encourage
others to participate in the future."
The eight-session course extends over a four-month
period and addresses current public safety concerns, with
an emphasis on the police officer's interaction with
members of the community to resolve problems that are
persistent, substantive and troublesome.
Some of the course topics include problem solving,
management and strategic planning, experiments of community
policing, diversity and ethical issues.
Officers are trained to be "proactive" as opposed to
"reactive" and to become active participants in social
change.
