South College Avenue detour
One block of South College Avenue-from Amstel Avenue
to Delaware Avenue-will be closed from Saturday, June 14,
through Sunday, June 29, in connection with the Gore Hall
construction project.
The closing is necessary to remove the existing
pedestrian walkway, which will be demolished, to erect the
steel framing for a new bridge and to install utilities for
Gore Hall, a major, new classroom building expected to open
in February.
Plans are that the new bridge (shown above) will be
ready for student use by the beginning of the fall semester.
In addition, after June 29 and continuing through mid-
August, lane shifts in this area of South College Avenue
will be in effect, to allow for completion of the new
pedestrian overpass.
Effective June 14-29, when the block-long area is
closed to through traffic, the detour routes are:
Northbound: Turn left onto Amstel Avenue to Elkton Road
and turn right onto Delaware Avenue.
Southbound: Continue west on Main Street to Elkton
Road, turn left onto Amstel Avenue and turn right onto South
College Avenue (Route 896) or continue west on Main Street
to Elkton Road, turn left onto Route 4 and turn right on
South College Avenue (Route 896).
Gore Hall, located on the Mall between Mitchell Hall
and Sharp Laboratory, will contain 25 classrooms, varying in
size from 25-seat seminar rooms to 80-seat case study rooms,
incorporating the latest in instructional technology.
The building is a gift to the University-one of the
most significant contributions in the University's history-
given by alumnus and trustee Robert W. Gore, alumna Sarah I.
Gore and Genevieve W. Gore. It is the first addition to the
heart of the campus since H. Rodney Sharp Laboratory was
built in 1961-62.
