Grant-writing sessions scheduled on June 23
Aprogram on "Writing Instructional Grant Proposals"
will be held on Monday, June 23, in the Ewing Room of the
Perkins Student Center. It is sponsored by the Center for
Teaching Effectiveness.
During the continental breakfast, from 8-8:45 a.m.,
there will be a panel discussion on getting ideas, with
faculty who have written successful instructional grant
proposals, featuring Michael Arenson, music, and George
Watson, physics and astronomy.
The 9 a.m.-noon working session on "Writing
Instructional Proposals" will feature Elizabeth A. Jones, a
research associate with the National Center on Postsecondary
Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (NCTLA) at Penn State
University.
Participants will learn about the major elements that
are critical for grant proposals. They also will design
plans for a project (based on their own interests and
expertise) including the identification of goals/objectives,
an outline of methods, evaluation and dissemination
strategies. They will learn how to develop the project
management plan and build a budget for proposed activities.
Jones will share tips and successful strategies for reaching
external foundations or government agencies. Faculty will
share proposal ideas with their colleagues in this session,
and participants will leave with the beginnings of their own
proposals to submit.
After a brown bag lunch, the program resumes from 12:30-
1:30 p.m. with a session on "Locating Funding Opportunities
on the Web." Hugh Campbell, Office of the Vice Provost for
Research, will conduct this session.
Participants will learn how to use the World Wide Web
to gather information about funding opportunities from both
federal and non-federal sponsors.
They also will be shown how to reach web sites
maintained by sponsors, how to search on-line databases of
funding opportunities and how to start receiving automatic
notifications of pertinent funding announcements.
From 1:30-3:30 p.m., a final working session will focus
on "Writing Instructional Proposals."
