              1997 Joel L. Silver Award winner announced
     
     Graduate student Anita Robinson Brown won the top
award at the 24th Joel L. Silver Award Symposium for
chemistry graduate students  held May 22 in Brown
Laboratory.
     The 1997 Silver award, a certificate and honorarium of
$200, was given to Brown for her presentation on the
"Adsorption of HOCl on Ice Surfaces: A Theoretical Study."
Nine other students also made presentations.
     The Silver award is designed to develop the ability of
graduate students to communicate the results of scientific
research in an oral presentation. The topic must be on
research conducted at the University, and each 15-minute
presentation is judged on its effectiveness and the quality
of research.
     The judges were Melissa Cichowicz, West Chester
University; Andrea Martin, Hercules Inc.; Marilyn
Stadalius, Mac-Mod Analytical Inc.; Krzysztof Szalewicz,
physics and astronomy; and Herbert Waite, marine studies.
