Working to designate drivers
Eight Main Street establishments that serve liquor have
been invited to participate in a novel Designated Driver
Program designed by a UD sophomore from near Cherry Hill,
N.J.
Jillian Crosby, a nutrition and biology education
major, is urging the establishments to advertise on a
special UD Designated Driver Mug. Once produced, the mug
would entitle the designated driver in a group of partiers
to free unlimited soda at participating establishments.
The idea originated in the Nutrition and Dietetics Club
when members were looking for a way to promote healthier
lifestyles.
"There are eight bars on Main Street, and the idea is
they can have their logos printed on the mug-get
advertising-in exchange for giving a designated driver who
presents the mug, free fountain drinks after 4 p.m.," Crosby
said.
Since the idea originated, it has been adopted as a
project by a committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
on campus.
"The idea is to show that although drinking can be fun,
it also can be safe," she said.
The 20-ounce plastic mugs, planned to be blue and gold
and to feature the University's mascot YoUDee, will be
distributed in the fall, free to students 21 or over.
Some will be placed in the bars as well, Crosby said.
Organizers said they hope that once initiated, the program
will continue from year to year.
