Employee shares expertise with Cab Calloway
School of the Arts
Richard Gordon, user services, shares his computer
expertise both on campus and off. When a team of seventh
graders from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts needed some
direction in creating a web page for the Delaware School Web
Site Competition, Gordon volunteered to lend a helping hand.
The outcome was third place in the contest, in which 26
Delaware middle and high schools participated, and a new
computer for the school. The two front-runners were Delmar
Junior-Senior High School and Milford High School.
The school-age team-Rachel Coates, Kerri Moore and
Samantha Jacklin-are all students in a communications arts
class taught by Janet Huckleberry.
Gordon invited the team and coach Huckleberry to the
University where they spent some hours looking at other
schools' web pages from across the country. Over pizza, they
brainstormed about what they had seen and what they might
do.
"The kids took it from there," Gordon said. "I did not
become involved until the project was almost over, when I
helped with editing and uploading. The team was creative and
organized and did some neat things."
The project, which is illustrated with several
photographs and graphics, describes the school and academic
programs, gives a biography of Cab Calloway, has a section
for parents and some interactive contests. It concludes with
a photograph and a brief, written self-portrait of each team
member.
