                   Hoerl Award recipients announced

Kristine Mulhorn and A. Brett Hauber were selected as
winners of the 1997 Arthur E. Hoerl Meritorious Student
Paper award, presented by the Delaware chapter of the
American Statistical Society. They received certificates and
a cash prize April 25.
Mulhorn, who recently received her doctorate in
sociology, constructed a model of recreational demand.
Hauber, a doctoral candidate in economics, carried out
an analysis of mortality risk factors among the elderly.
The award honors the late Prof. Hoerl, a distinguished
statistician and fellow of the American Statistical
Association, who was on the UD faculty from 1967-1986 after
working as the DuPont Co.'s first statistician.
Students in accredited graduate programs in all
disciplines throughout the state of Delaware are eligible to
enter the competition. The winning papers are chosen on
basis of development and/or application of high quality
statistical methods.
To ensure the award continues, the chapter has created
a fund in honor of Prof. Hoerl, with a goal is $10,000.
Donations may be made by check to the Delaware Chapter ASA,
Hoerl Award and sent to John Schuenemeyer, Department of
Mathematical Sciences.
