'Solve It' math sessions are scheduled during summer

For the second year, the University is offering Solve
It, a summer mathematics problem-solving program for
students who will be in fifth through eighth grades this
fall.
Students will have the chance to work on interesting
and challenging math problems by responding to materials
sent to them in the mail throughout the summer months.
The program will provide an opportunity for students to
sharpen their problem-solving strategies, learn about new
concepts and review ideas covered in their school
mathematics curriculum. The program encourages family
involvement and will include some problems that will fit
into summer's vacation atmosphere.
Three monthly packets of material will be mailed by the
15th of each month beginning in June. Each packet will
include a mail-back form containing a set of eight problems
and a discussion of the solutions to previous problems.
Participants will receive written comments and
feedback. Graded solutions will be returned in the next
month's packet. A final report of student progress will be
sent at the end of August. The report will indicate how a
student did with respect to other equivalent grade-level
program participants and will include a summary reviewing
the student's progress and a certificate of recognition.
Costs are $45 for Level A problems and $55 for Level B
problems.
