Two Delawareans named Warner, Taylor recipients

Katherine Lee of Newark and Larry Boehm of Elsmere were
selected as the outstanding man and woman of the Class of
1997 and received this year's Warner and Taylor awards
during Honors Day ceremonies May 9.
The awards are presented annually to the male and
female senior who are selected from nominations for their
academic excellence and for their leadership and active
involvement in the community and campus life.
A family community services major in the College of
Human Resources, Lee is recipient of the Emalea P. Warner
Award, named in honor of the woman who was instrumental in
the establishment of the Women's College.
Lee has been on the Dean's List every semester and is a
member of the Golden Key, Kappa Omicron Nu and Alpha Lambda
Delta honor societies. She is a volunteer at Emmaus House,
Girls Inc., Lifelines, Penpal and Delawareans United to
Prevent Child Abuse. She also has received the UD Scholar
Award, an Alumni Merit Award and was named a Gore Scholar.
According to Teresa M. Cooney, individual and family
studies, "Katherine Lee exemplifies the kind of student we
are all proud to have associated with our University. She is
extremely well-rounded, focusing her time and efforts on top-
notch academic performance, as well as valuable campus and
community service aimed at improving the lives of her fellow
students and those in need in the community."
Boehm, this year's recipient of the Alexander J. Taylor
Award, is an English and communication major in the College
of Arts and Science. In addition to his excellent scholastic
achievements, he was an undergraduate teaching assistant in
the Department of Communication and created a weekly comic
strip entitled "Larry's World" for The Review.
Boehm also is a freelance writer for Delaware State
News and has been involved in volunteer work for the YWCA.
According to Juliet Dee, communication, "In addition to
being an exceptional student, Larry goes far out of his way
to help his fellow students. Larry is a natural leader. He
brings out the best in those around him."
Each recipient received a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond, and
their names will be engraved on plaques that stand near the
Alumni Room in the Perkins Student Center and in Alumni
Hall. On May 31, the two graduating seniors will lead the
alumni delegates in procession into Delaware Stadium at the
start of Commencement ceremonies.
