Gardner said that, unfortunately, students are the
focus of media attention primarily when problems are
reported. The ceremony was initiated last year to recognize
individual students and "let people know about some of the
positive activities and contributions by students in the
city of Newark." he said. "I am pleased with the
participation of the students in community projects."
Gardner said it is important that young people know
that others, including city staff and officials, are aware
of their positive actions and appreciate them.
"These 12 students," he said, "represent a large number
of University students who participate in many community
activities each year."
Jane Moore, Dean of Students' Office, who was involved
in coordinating the University's participation in the event,
said, "We are very pleased to recognize these students for
their citizenship and their valuable contribution to the
Newark community."
Also representing the University at the ceremony were
President David P. Roselle, Roland Smith, vice president for
student life; and Tim Brooks, assistant vice president for
student life.
